When it comes to rekeying locks, you want a professional service that will give you the results you need. Unfortunately, there are many companies out there that don’t have your best interests in mind and may take advantage of your situation.
You can avoid this by doing some research on reputable companies before committing to one. We’ve put together a list of things to look for when choosing your rekeying company so that you know what to expect from them and how they’ll treat you throughout the process.
Here’s our checklist!
Choosing a rekeying service FAQs
1) What does rekeying do?
A locksmith uses a keying machine to change the tumbler configuration of the lock. This is often necessary when an old, worn key no longer works or if you’ve lost your keys and need to ensure that only people authorized to access the property can unlock it. It’s important to note that rekeying service doesn’t affect the master key system for your home unless you specifically request it does so.
2) What’s involved?
Opening up the lock and pulling out all of its inner components requires a specific set of tools. Fortunately, these are readily available to locksmiths everywhere. Once inside the lock, the locksmith has to disassemble the components and then re-configure them. A new key will need to be made, which is called a “cut.”
3) What do you need to know?
Keep in mind that you can’t do all types of locks yourself. For example, radial arm deadbolts require the use of a special machine.
The part of the lock that needs to be rekeyed must also be accessible, which limits the types of locks that can be rekeyed. Lastly, rekeying service doesn’t work with electronic locks or biometric security systems.
Know Who You’re Dealing With When you hire a local provider to do this for you, it’s easier to hold them accountable for any problems.

5) How to rekey locks
As a locksmith technician, I have plenty of experience in rekeying locks. There are many types of locks out there, and it is best to find a locksmith who can handle all types of lock modifications. Locks today come with either standard pins or security pins.
Standard pins will work for an easy rekey job, however, you may not be able to choose the specific pins you want in your lock. This is something I can help with if you are looking for a secure job.
Security pins require more skill and will cost more because of their special configuration. Locksmith technicians don’t need to know how to pick locks like burglars, but they must follow proper training standards to be able to pick a lock quickly and efficiently.
There are a few steps to the rekey process:
- Locate the Master Key System for your home or business. This is required by law in most states, but you can also find it yourself if you have the proper tools.
- Remove all pins/drivers from the cylinder of your lock.
- Take apart the lock (if it is not already) and remove all of the internal parts.
- Replace the pins/drivers with your newly cut keys. You can order them through me or go to Home Depot or Lowes even. Just make sure they are the same brand as your lock.
- Clean up any burrs inside the lock.
- Re-assemble the lock and you are done!
If this process sounds familiar, that’s because it is the same as a locksmith would do for a car door or safe to open your car/home up.

6) What is a master key?
A master key system gives access to multiple locks without having to carry around a bunch of keys.
This can be especially convenient for businesses with employees, or homeowners who have family members coming in and out of the home while they are at work.
If you’re looking for added convenience, this is the way to go. The only problem is that if one person loses their key there’s a good chance the other keys will no longer work.
7) Why rekey a lock?
Homes and businesses are required to have master key systems by law. All of the locks in your home should be rekeyed with the same key, or all-new keys made for each lock or at least every other one so you can tell which lock goes to what door.
The number of key changes needed is dependant on how many people need keys to access the property and who has them.
If you’ve had a problem with theft or burglary, you should rekey all of your locks immediately. If there’s one thing that will prevent this from happening again, it is rekeying the lock on your door and replacing any worn parts like springs and screws.
8) How to identify the best rekey service provider?
The best rekey service providers understand how important their job is to homeowners and business owners and they don’t take it lightly.
They will treat your keys as if they were their own; making sure that no damage has been done to them before, during, or after the process.
Choosing a rekeying service
When it comes to a master key system, the only way to get new keys is from the original manufacturer of the lock. If they have gone out of business or no longer produce this device, you will not be able to get new keys made and your service will be limited.
You need a dependable locksmith who can provide you with the highest quality service when it comes to master key systems.
When rekeying your locks, you should always make sure that they are done in a timely fashion.
If you’re in a business where time is money, there is no reason for this process to take more than an hour or two at most Keep this in mind when you’re looking for a company to handle the job.
