Very gently, attempt to wiggle the key out of the lock

The most common cause of a broken key is a hasty attempt to rip the key out. By gently moving the key back and forth, the key will often become loosened and can be removed more easily.

Apply graphite powder or some other similar lubricant

A suitable lubricant is often the best way to remove a stuck key from a lock; simply apply the powder or other lubricant along the length of the exposed key and attempt to slide it from the lock. If the key is not removed immediately, do not try to force it from the lock as this could result in fracture.

Apply a cold-compress to the exposed area of the key

Applying a cold compress or bag of ice will cause the key to contract slightly and may loosen it from the lock. Again, do not try to force the key out of the lock as this could cause fracture and make removal more difficult.
